Toenail Fungus Q & A

What is toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus is a fungal infection that affects your toenails. This fungus thrives in dark, moist spaces, which explains why it’s more common in people who wear shoes and socks throughout the day and people with sweaty feet.

The infection usually starts at the tip of your nail and spreads from there. As it develops, it creates symptoms like:

  • Thickening toenails
  • Crumbling at the edges of your nail
  • Yellowing toenails
  • Odor

If you’ve noticed changes in your toenail, talk to your Precision Podiatry provider about it. They diagnose the cause of your toenail changes so you can start the right treatment and protect the health of your nails.

How is toenail fungus diagnosed?

Toenail fungus isn’t the only cause of toenail abnormalities. An injury to the nail, small bone spurs under the nail, and psoriasis can all affect your toenails. To ensure you get the right treatment, your Precision Podiatry provider takes a scraping from your toenail. Testing this sample allows them to diagnose you accurately.

If you do have toenail fungus, don’t worry. Your Precision Podiatry provider has a number of highly effective treatment options.

How is toenail fungus treated?

If your fungus is caught early, you can often treat it with over-the-counter medication and special care to keep your feet clean and dry. Changing your socks throughout the day helps.

If the fungus has taken hold under your toenail, your Precision Podiatry provider may recommend a topical medication or oral prescription to kill the virus.

Alternatively, they can use the Q-Clear™ laser fungal treatment. This laser targets the fungal infection while protecting the healthy portion of your nail and your skin. Your provider kills the fungus with the laser, giving you a way to stop the infection in its tracks and protect the healthy portion of your nail.

Your Precision Podiatry provider talks with you about your treatment options so you can determine which one is right for you. They also help you make changes to avoid a recurrent infection. Keeping your shower clean and changing your socks regularly both help to avoid another fungal infection.

Catching toenail fungus early makes it easiest to treat.
