Plantar Fasciitis Q & A

What is plantar fasciitis?

Before looking into plantar fasciitis, it’s first helpful to understand a little bit about the anatomy of your feet. The plantar fascia is a thick band of ligament that runs across the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel to your toes. This fibrous band of tissue helps to absorb shock and supports your arch. Every time you step, it’s put to the test.

That can become a problem over time. When the plantar fascia is stretched too much, it gets inflamed. This inflammation is called plantar fasciitis.

Because runners and many other athletes put regular pressure on their plantar fascia, they’re most likely to get diagnosed with this condition.

That said, plantar fasciitis isn’t reserved exclusively for people with an active lifestyle. Even simply walking can cause inflammation in your plantar fascia. Obesity and jobs that require a lot of time on your feet heighten your risk for plantar fasciitis.

What does plantar fasciitis feel like?

Plantar fasciitis causes a specific symptom: sharp, stabbing pain you feel at the bottom of your foot near your heel.

This pain usually flares when weight is put on the foot after an extended period of rest. If you feel heel pain when you first get out of bed or after you get up from sitting for a while, it’s probably plantar fasciitis. Interestingly, you usually won’t feel the pain worsen during exercise. Instead, your plantar fascia might feel fine during the activity, then the pain flares afterward.

If you feel a stabbing pain in your heel, don’t wait to make an appointment at Precision Podiatry. There, your doctor can perform a physical exam to diagnose your condition.
